Subterfuge
Charcoal and pastel on gessoed paper, 15”x22”
Are any of us what we seem?
Subterfuge was created prior to the era of social media omnipresence. The idea of masks we present and how we alter our identity is not a new phenomenon. We’ve become too acutely aware of the image we portray to the world and many are fabricating their lives to mimic the lifestyles they see on their phones. The excess and extravagance are made to seem commonplace to the point that we are even glorifying those who attain it unscrupulously and illegally. Think Inventing Anna, Tinder Swindler, and Bad Vegan to name a few.
The Subterfuge drawing represents the co-mingling of the female human torso with that of an elephant. Never completely the female figure and never completely the head of an elephant the blurred lines hint at a metamorphosis taking place. The areola become the elephant eyes and the trunk protrudes from the abdomen almost as if a giant intestinal growth. The hide of the elephant trunk is not portrayed so much as a texture, but almost as a tattoo. The arms are extended outward in an arch that echoes the elephant’s ears.
